Build log

Building Haven in the open.

Two prototypes, every part and command, and a test plan that runs with the internet unplugged. Here’s where things stand.

Start small

The bare minimum that proves the idea.

One Raspberry Pi, two pocket radios and the phones you already own. If this works with no internet and no cell service, everything else is an upgrade.

Bare minimum prototype: one hub at home serves every phone; radios carry texts across townHome: the Haven hub, a Raspberry Pi 5, holds the library (Wikipedia, WikiMed), runs a Mumble push-to-talk server and makes its own Wi-Fi network called HavenHub. It connects by USB to the hub radio, a T1000-E that is always on. Phone A at home joins the hub over Wi-Fi (HavenHub) for the library in a browser, the push-to-talk app and an offline AI app, and pairs with the hub radio over Bluetooth. Away from home: a family radio (T1000-E, carried) sends text and GPS to the hub radio over the LoRa mesh, and pairs over Bluetooth with Phone B, which runs the Meshtastic app and needs no cell service.HOMEAWAY FROM HOMEHaven hub (Raspberry Pi 5)Library: Wikipedia, WikiMedPush-to-talk server (Mumble)Own Wi-Fi network: HavenHubHub radioT1000-Ealways onPhone A (home)Library in browserPush-to-talk appOffline AI appFamily radioT1000-E, carriedsends text and GPSPhone BMeshtastic appno cell service neededUSBWi-Fi: HavenHubBluetoothBluetoothLoRa meshtext + GPS

Test plan

Ten tests. Internet unplugged.

Each claim on the homepage maps to one of these. Results, including the ones that don’t go our way, will be published here as they come in.

  1. 01

    Home page

Five phones open haven.lan at once and load the library, AI page and file downloads.

  2. 02

    Wi-Fi coverage

Walk the house and yard and mark where the library stops loading.

  3. 03

    Push-to-talk

Three phones talk on Mumble from different rooms and the yard.

    Not run yet
  4. 04

    Hub AI

Ask three real questions from a phone browser. Record seconds to the first word and whether the answers are right.

  5. 05

    Mesh range

Carry a family radio away from the house and note the farthest point messages still arrive, with the roof relay up and again with it unplugged.

    Not run yet
  6. 06

    Location

Confirm every family radio’s position shows on the Meshtastic map.

    Not run yet
  7. 07

    Weather alerts

Leave the alert service running through a NOAA weekly test broadcast and confirm the message reaches every radio.

    Not run yet
  8. 08

    Power outage

Flip the breaker. Record how long the hub runs on the UPS board and the router on the power bank.

    Not run yet
  9. 09

    Restart

After power returns, confirm Wi-Fi, library, Mumble, AI and alerts all come back on their own.

    Not run yet
  10. 10

    Faraday bag

Message the sealed spare radio and confirm nothing gets through, including after folding the bag 20 times.

Design files

Print your own enclosure.

Both stages include a 3D-printable enclosure in PETG: a compact case with a radio dock for Stage 1, and an open-frame cage with an accessory caddy for Stage 2. The STL files and editable OpenSCAD sources will be published here alongside the guides.
